Yame is known for gyokuro and other shaded teas. Tea fields across the Yabe River basin receive regular rainfall and frequent mist, with pronounced shifts between day and night. Shading before harvest retains sweetness and umami in the leaf while moderating astringency.

Beneath the Shade

Tea cultivation in Yame dates to 1423. The region's tea tradition now spans more than six centuries.
The main growing area follows the Yabe River basin. Regular rainfall, frequent mist, and pronounced shifts between day and night support a long practice of shaded tea.
For this matcha, first-flush Yabukita is shaded before harvest. Reduced light retains sweetness and umami while moderating astringency.

Yabukita gives the cup a clean tea character, mellow sweetness, and a light nutty note. The profile is precise rather than heavy.
Water keeps that clarity at the front. Milk carries the same note with more softness. One cultivar, two preparations, and a character shaped by Yame's history of shaded tea.

We present Japanese tea and matcha as part of the Drinking Heals collection. In Japan, IPPUKU describes a brief pause—sometimes with tea, sometimes with a cigarette. Drinking Heals reimagines IPPUKU through Japanese tea. Inspired by the familiar warning “ Smoking Kills ” , it proposes another message: “ Drinking Heals .” A moment once associated with tobacco becomes a quiet ritual of water, tea, and time.
